“I Believe in a Thing Called Love” is the epitome of cute. Maurene Goo is the author of this awesome novel. Basically, it is a hilarious and endearing romance full of zany Korean-drama fun. The novel plot is cute and the characters are amazing. It follows Desi, a type A heroine during her senior year after she concocts an insane plan to get a boy to fall in love with her. Desi is a literal, fact-based, sceptic who as it turns out is deeply romantic. She’s an overachiever and caretaker, a role she inhabited after her mother died. She’s kind, smart, loyal, and fearless. She’s also an awkward, clumsy mess when it comes to romance and flirting. Somehow, the novel is predictable but interesting. Literally, it follows a formula as Desi follows a formula, and each chapter heading tells you what’s happening next. Overachieving heroine Desi Lee has a plan for everything and she’s good at everything. She’s already class valedictorian, a member of just about every school club and student council, and a star of the school soccer team. She’s Stanford University-bound. She’s a girl on a serious mission to be a doctor like her mother. We definitely recommend as a summer read, or if you’re looking for something on the lighter funnier side.
