The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky

The Perks of Being a Wallflower

The Perks of Being a Wallflower Book Summary

“The Perks of Being a Wallflower” is a funny, touching, and haunting modern classic. Stephen Chbosky is the author of this book. It is a truly moving story about Charlie, a freshman in high school, who is by no means popular. Charlie goes through life watching but never truly participating, that is until he meets Sam and Patrick. He quickly becomes friends with Sam and Patrick, who invite them into their friend group and give him a place to belong. Charlie, in turn, is able to touch their lives as he is a character who sees people for who they truly are. The story is written in an epistolary format, which is fitting because Charlie is a budding writer. While it is written in letters, Chobsky does an excellent job of showing us action, instead of telling, and skillfully weaving in the dialogue between characters, as well as Charlie’s inner dialogue. This book touches on common issues that come up in high school love, relationships, abuse, drug use, and sex, but it does so in a manner that maintains the dignity of the book and is filtered through Charlie’s eyes. It is also a book that you could not put down because as you get deeper into the story, you learn more about why Charlie is the way he is and, at the end, what has truly been troubling him.
