LikeWar Book Summary
“LikeWar: The Weaponization of Social Media” opens with a telling quote: “It sounds a dreadful thing to say, but these are things that didn’t necessarily need to be true as long as they’re believed. Alexander Nix”. Authors P. W. Singer and Emerson T. Brooking do a pretty good job of tracing the trajectory of social media from its scant beginnings to its contemporary (and growing) role as a political weapon. The authors have done extensive research and seem determined to include every note they made. Much of the content is conclusionary, some of it reasonable, some not. One of the best sections of the book and perhaps the key to the entire book is the author’s rendition of how Taylor Swift became an Instagram icon and how terrorist group ISIS emulated her style. The book also goes into the history of the internet, as well as the beginnings of social media. It gives us a little history on the early years of social media, focusing on details. It discusses how ISIS, Russia, the US, China, and others have used the internet and social media over the years as well as the rise of the citizen journalist. In short, it is a great book the tells the true power of social media.
